2011 All-Long Island baseball team

JAKE THOMAS
Long Island Player of the Year
Calhoun, C, Sr.
He earned the Diamond Award presented to Nassau’s top player after a season in which he broke almost every record in Calhoun baseball history. Thomas batted .485 with 40 runs, eight doubles, seven home runs, 31 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. He had a .648 on-base percentage and a .941 slugging percentage. In his three-year career, he had 112 hits, 20 home runs, 99 runs, 95 RBIs and a .465 average as the Colts compiled a 45-9 record with him behind the plate.

ALEC SOLE
Suffolk Player of the Year
Sachem North, SS/P, Sr.
There was something about Alec Sole that screamed leadership. It could have been the way he handled the bat in the leadoff spot for the Flaming Arrows. He sprayed hits all over the field on his way to a .505 batting average, the catalyst of an offense that marched to the Suffolk Class AA championship. Or maybe it was his defensive wizardry at shortstop where he took away so many hits with his lateral range. Or it might have been his mound presence and 6-2 record, including three saves and a 1.25 ERA.

Sole led the team in every offensive category. He had 46 hits, seven doubles, six triples, 29 runs scored and 28 RBIs for the Flaming Arrows. He also had 13 stolen bases. He pitched 51.1 innings and struck out 56. He will attend St. Louis University on a baseball scholarship. For his accomplishments, he earned the Yastrzemski Award, Suffolk baseball’s most coveted prize.

SEAN ABBATE
Division, 1B/P, Sr.
The Nassau Conference A-II MVP went 10-1 and led the Blue Dragons to the LI Class A championship. He struck out 106 in 72 innings and finished with a sparkling 0.75 earned run average. Next stop: Manhattan College.

STEVE ASCHER
Mattituck, P/OF, Sr.
All-Suffolk selection who had an 11-1 record and led the Tuckers to their first county Class B championship. He pitched 69 innings and struck out 116. He walked 25, allowed 29 hits and five earned runs for a 0.53 ERA. He struck out 13 and threw a one-hitter in the Long Island Class B title win over Oyster Bay.

JIM BULVA
Mineola, P/1B, Sr.
The Nassau Conference A-VI MVP was a four-year varsity player, batted .500 this year with 38 hits, 25 runs scored, 16 stolen bases, 13 extra base hits, 35 RBI and a .789 slugging. He has an incredible 102 career hits, 79 RBI and a .405 career average.

JOHN DADDINO
Carey, P, Sr.
All Nassau Conference AA-III selection returned to the hill after labrum surgery to regain the form that had major league scouts considering him for the amateur draft. His explosive 90 mph fastball and mound toughness helped him to an 8-2 record, averaging more than a strikeout an inning. He will attend Iona on a baseball scholarship.

ALEX FALCONI
St. Mary’s, C, Sr.
All-CHSAA selection with outstanding defensive skills, highly-regarded as Long Island’s top catching prospect. He batted .322 with 11 runs scored and 12 RBI. He will attend Seton Hall on a baseball scholarship.

ANTHONY GATTO
Smithtown West, OF/P, Sr.
He batted .441 with 103 hits during a fabulous four-year varsity career. Three-time All-County selection, four-time All-League pick, Gatto will play college at University of Maryland Baltimore County.

REMY JANCO
Half Hollow Hills West, P, Sr.
Suffolk League IV MVP was a crafty lefty who finished with an 8-0 record and a 0.82 ERA. He threw 51 innings and struck out 90 batters. He mixes a cut fastball with a change and curve that keeps batters off balance. He’ll play at Duke in the fall.

MICHAEL O’REILLY
Shoreham-Wading River, P/SS, Jr.
All-Suffolk selection put together a remarkable season on the mound and at the plate. He was 9-0 with a 1.45 ERA. He also batted. 475 with 21 RBI and 22 runs scored. He was one of the key cogs in Shoreham’s march to the Suffolk Class A title.

TOM ROULIS
Chaminade, 2B, Sr.
All-CHSAA selection had 38 hits, including 11 doubles and a .500 average in the CHSAA’s wood bat league. He scored 22 runs, drove in 30 runs and led the Flyers to the playoff championship. He had 82 career hits in three years and will attend Dartmouth College.

CAMERON SORGIE
Floyd, P, Sr.
He was the Suffolk League I MVP. He threw 58 innings and struck out 65. He walked 18, allowed 23 hits, five earned runs and had an ERA of 0.62. He fired two no-hitters, a one-hitter and a two-hitter.

ERIC TRUSS
Chaminade, P, Sr.
He was the only pitcher in the CHSAA to beat every league opponent this season. He was 9-0 with 51.2 innings pitched and allowed 37 hits, while striking out 41. His ERA was 0.94 ERA.

MATT VOGEL
Patchogue-Medford, P/SS, Soph.
Only Suffolk sophomore to earn All-County honor. Hard-throwing righty had three shutouts, two saves and an ERA of 1.03 this season. He was 6-1 with 92 strikeouts. He only allowed 25 hits and 16 walks over 54 innings. He also batted .342 with three home runs, four doubles and 17 RBI. He is the second sophomore to earn All-Long Island honors.

MARC HEDQUIST
Nassau Coach of the Year
Carey (20-7)
The Seahawks enjoyed a wonderful season in which Hedquist led them to the school’s first county and Long Island baseball championships. They swept MacArthur in the Nassau Class AA finals and beat Sachem North for the Long Island crown.

TOM GAMBINO
Suffolk Coach of the Year
Sachem North (21-5)
The Flaming Arrows put it all together this year. Sachem won the Suffolk title for the first time since 1987 with an 8-0 win over Commack. They become only the fifth team in Suffolk large schools history to fail to win a league title and still go on to capture the county crown.
