The world’s last operational B-29 bomber is scheduled to arrive Thursday at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport in advance of this weekend’s Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach.

The Superfortress long-range heavy bombers carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, forcing Japan’s surrender in World War II.

Seven WWII veterans will gather for the plane’s arrival at 11 a.m. One of them — John Stubel, 93, of Garden City — is a former B-29 crew chief. He will fly in the massive bomber, his first such flight since 1945.

The B-29, along with a B-17 Flying Fortress and other military planes, are available for ground tours at the museum, 1230 New Hwy., East Farmingdale, from Friday through Monday. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and veterans, and $5 for children.
