Bayport-Blue Point (24-0) beats Miller Place to win Suffolk Class A title

By his own admission, Bayport-Blue Point's Chris Brewer was not perfect in Wednesday's Suffolk Class A championship, but he learned that it doesn't take a perfect game to achieve perfection.

The senior righthander, who struggled with his command early and allowed the game's first run in the second inning, redeemed himself at the plate in the third when his seeing-eye single to right scored two runs and put the Phantoms ahead for good, and secured their place in history.

Top-seeded Bayport-Blue Point completed a perfect season in Suffolk and beat No. 4 Miller Place, 5-2, to win its first county championship since 2004.

The Phantoms (24-0) are the first team to go undefeated and win a Suffolk title since Whitman went 29-0-1 in 1975.

"I didn't have any of my stuff and was able to contain them to two runs . . . but that hit just brought my confidence up so much and I knew my team would be there for me," Brewer said. "We weren't worrying about the history. We just knew we had to win one more game. "

Bayport-Blue Point will play in the Long Island Class A championship/Southeast Regional final Tuesday against the Nassau Class A champion. Miller Place finished 17-9.

"We're stoked," shortstop Alex Dura said. "We want to win it really bad right now and bring it back to Bayport."

Brewer's single in the third inning keyed a five-run inning. Ryan Dollop tied the score at 1 on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, setting up Brewer's hit that scored runners from second and third to make it 3-1. Two batters later, Dura (2-for-3) hit a two-run double in the gap in right-center to make it 5-1.

Brewer got out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the fourth unscathed and then settled down. He went the distance and allowed two unearned runs and eight hits with three walks and a strikeout.

"What turned it for him was the hit," Bayport-Blue Point coach Jim Moccio said of Brewer. "He was struggling on the mound and came up in a big spot to hit, and that was huge. That's what seniors do . . . Believe me we had our bullpen up early and in every inning, but he just kept getting better and better."
