The path to a county championship for Jericho boys fencing was not an easy one, but Bennett Cohen, Chris Xu and their Jayhawks teammates were undaunted by the challenge.

No. 2 Jericho defeated top-seeded Garden City, 14-5, Saturday afternoon at Wheatley to win the Nassau County boys fencing championship. Prior to fencing the Trojans, Jericho (13-2) unseated No. 3 Great Neck North, the reigning county champions, with a 14-7 semifinal win.

“To be up to the challenge, facing such talented and worthy opponents and coming through, it’s obviously very rewarding for the kids,” coach Seth Skolnick said.

Cohen (epee), Chris Xu, and Max Rudolph (foil) all went 2-0 in both matches, while Alex Gittler went 2-1 in sabre (including the championship clincher) against Garden City (13-2).

Jericho will fence Suffolk regular season champion Ward Melville in the Long Island Championships on Tuesday at Wheatley.

Garden City wins girls title

Third-seeded Garden City defeated No. 1 Great Neck South, 14-8, in the girls championship, sending the Trojans to the Long Island Championship for the third time in four years.

“We went in as the third-seed and went out with a big plaque,” said six-time county champion coach Michael Kreidman, who said he is retiring after the season.

The Trojans, who beat Wheatley 14-2 in the semifinals, were led by Tia Petrides (4-0 in foil), Charlotte Osborne (4-1 in sabre), Elizabeth Strysko (4-1 in foil), Dessie DiMino (3-0 in epee), and Bridget Strysko (2-1 in epee).

Garden City (12-3) will fence Half Hollow Hills in the Long Island Championship.
