Jewish groups on Long Island are holding a challah-thon until Thursday in an effort to provide comfort food to Jewish communities affected by Sandy.

Challah, a special Jewish braided bread, will be distributed in Long Beach, Oceanside and Five Towns in time for the upcoming Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest.

Anyone who wants to donate freshly baked or pre-made challah is asked to indicate on the bag where the challah was made and whether it is kosher. Challah donations can be brought to any designated drop-off location by Thursday at 11 a.m.:

Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, 74 Hauppauge Rd., Commack.

North Shore Jewish Center, 385 Old Town Rd., Port Jefferson Station.

Temple Isaiah, 1404 Stony Brook Rd., Stony Brook.

Crossbaum's, 3 Birdseye Circle, Stony Brook.

Jewish Without Walls, 10 Premier Ct., Nesconset.

Dix Hills Jewish Center, 555 Vanderbilt Pkwy., Dix Hills.

East Northport Jewish Center, 328 Elwood Rd., East Northport.

South Huntington Jewish Center, 2600 New York Ave., Melville.

Mid-Island Y JCC, 45 Manetto Hill Rd., Plainview. Schechter School of Long Island, 1 Barbara Lane, Jericho.

Jewish Education Project, 777 Larkfield Rd., Suite 118, Commack, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
