In a rematch of last season's Suffolk County High School Hockey League finals, No. 1 Connetquot-Sayville took the first step toward avenging last year's defeat, beating No. 2 Smithtown-Hauppauge, 5-2, in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series, Monday at the RInx in Hauppauge.

Brandon Gennarelli scored two goals as the T-Birds never trailed. Connetquot-Sayville led 2-0 after the first and 4-1 by the end of the second period. Daniel Nelson had a goal and an assist for Smithtown-Hauppauge (18-5).

Connetquot-Sayville (19-2-1-1) will go for the series sweep, tomorrow, at the Rinx at 9:20 p.m. Smithtown-Hauppauge swept Connetquot-Sayville to win last season's county title.

"We’re very confident. I love our odds," Gennarelli told MSG Varsity. "Everybody on our team played a phenomenal game. As long as everybody brings the same game style on Wednesday, we’ll be fine."
