Kaleigh Lagbille, 11, stood in front of one of several orange tables set up around the center of Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove Tuesday, working on her mustache. With scissors in hand, she worked diligently, focusing on making the edges perfect with no extra paper left behind.
“Now, I get to pretend to be the Lorax,” Kaleigh said as she held her completed Lorax-style mustache up to her face.
On Tuesday, the Simon Kidgits Club hosted a party for kids in celebration of the release of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” movie on DVD. The event was held at the Smith Haven Mall and included a variety of crafts projects that revolved around the movie.
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the publication of Dr. Seuss’ first book, “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street!” the Kidgits Club has made this year the “Year of the Seuss.” This is the second Seuss-themed event the club has held this year, with the previous one in March.
Children moved from station to station, working on different projects and learning about the environment — one of the main themes of the Lorax movie. Children were invited to make paper “truffula trees” and plant some real flowers in their own biodegradable pots. At the end of the event, a free copy of “The Lorax” DVD was raffled off to participants.
“These events are pretty popular,” said parent Stacie Rudilosso, of Centereach. “They give out prizes and toys to kids and they’re usually all gone by the end of the event. It’s nice for the kids.”
