East Hampton gathering to clean beaches rescheduled
East Hampton’s first townwide beach cleanup, planned for last Saturday, Feb. 8, has been rescheduled for this Saturday, Feb 15 after heavy snow on the ocean beaches made it difficult to see the trash.
Volunteers are being asked to sign up with the organizers so that — if bad weather is again a problem — they can be notified not to show up on the beach at 9 a.m. Forecasts call for as much as six inches of snow starting Thursday.
Four starting spots for the cleanup have been designated and volunteers will be given gloves and bags to sort recyclables from trash. Town trustees have agreed to allow people out on the beach after the cleanup to remove the accumulated trash.
The volunteers will be grouped to work at Georgica Beach, Montauk Beach, Montauk Point and Napeague Beach. Two groups will form at Napeague, one going east and the other going west.
The cleanup will end around 2 p.m., and be followed by refreshments for volunteers at the American Legion hall on Montauk Highway in Amagansett.
Volunteers can contact cleanup organizer Dell Cullum at kachina3535@gmail.com or East Hampton Town Litter Committee chairwoman Deb Klughers at keepitgreen@optonline.net.
