It will be easier — and free — to get fit in Elwood. The Town of Huntington recently placed “circuit-style” exercise equipment at Elwood Park.
The outdoor fitness center comprises five exercise machines designed to give 12 adults at one time a full body workout.
The equipment consists of a four-person abdominal and dip station; a two-person lat pull down and chest press machine; a four-person leg press machine; a single rower machine; and a single elliptical machine. All of the equipment is made to withstand the elements and are set in concrete. The park is at 309 Cuba Hill Rd.
“Not everyone can afford a gym membership, own or have the extra space for exercise equipment, but that should not prevent someone from working out and adopting a healthier lifestyle,” said town board member Mark Cuthbertson.
He added parents conceivably could work out as their children enjoy the nearby playground.
The $60,000 worth of equipment was funded through the Environmental Open Space and Park Improvement Fund and Neighborhood Parks Fund.
The town has other outdoor fitness installations. Savings Court Park in Greenlawn offers a .3-mile loop consisting of a 12-station course, with isometric squat, leg lift, push-up, pulldown and sit-up equipment.
At Dix Hills Park there is a quarter-mile-long fitness trail with a balance beam, beam jump and beam run, chin-up bar, isometric squat, leg lift, leg stretch, push-up bar, sit-up platform equipment and steps.
