Energy-saving light project in Lynbrook
Lynbrook Mayor William Hendrick Wednesday morning installed the first lightbulb in a major energy-saving lighting project for the village.
Hendrick kicked off the new project by using a basket crane to replace the first streetlight, at 51 Lennox Ave., with a solar panel light-emitting diode (LED) light. Hendrick, other village officials and representatives of Johnson Controls, a Milwaukee-based company that makes energy-efficient systems, were at the demonstration.
The city has selected Johnson Controls to implement the program that will include the replacement of more than 1,140 streetlights with new LED lighting. Additional energy improvements will be made at the library, town hall, the town pool, public works department and fire department headquarters.
The new community lighting and energy conservation project would allow the village to cut energy consumption by 32 percent and save $4.4 million over 15 years, village and company officials said.
The program will be funded by grants, rebates and energy savings that are expected to create a surplus of $730,000 — after payments — over the life of the 15-year performance contract between the village and Johnson Controls, village officials said.
Work on the project is expected to begin this month with completion set for next May, village officials said.
