Fire Island shipwreck unearthed by Sandy

The high waves pushed ashore by superstorm Sandy leveled the dunes on areas of Fire Island, exposing the remains of this shipwreck east of Davis Park. The high waves pushed ashore by superstorm Sandy leveled the dunes on areas of Fire Island, exposing the remains of a shipwreck east of Davis Park.
Experts at the Long Island Maritime Museum believe the wooden ship is a post-Civil War cargo vessel built before 1880, and they are conducting research to determine which one.
The National Park Service believes it is the remains of the Bessie A. White, a four-masted coal schooner built in 1919, wrecked on Feb. 6, 1922, and periodically uncovered by storms.
