Glen Cove waterfront hearing tonight

The Nassau County Planning Commission has completed its review of Glen Cove’s massive waterfront redevelopment, offering no recommendations for change, officials said.

Planning commissioners made the announcement at their Sept. 15 meeting. The county review, required by state law, is a precursor to the Glen Cove Planning Board’s site plan approval.

The local board will hold a public hearing tonight at 8 on Glen Isle’s final environmental impact statement, which was accepted this summer after two years of modification. Construction on the billion-dollar project’s first phase could begin next year.

Although Glen Isle retains the 860 residential units proposed in a draft environmental impact statement, the percentage of rentals has grown from 21 percent to 65 percent. Developers RXR-Glen Isle Partners cited the need to keep young professionals, who can’t yet afford a home, in the area.

At last week’s county meeting, Planning Commission chairman Jeffrey Greenfield said he supported the rental housing, which, in general, has become a target of area homeowners in several communities.

“This is the type of project we need in Nassau County today,” Greenfield said.

Tonight’s hearing will be at Glen Cove City Hall, 9 Glen St.
