Goldstein's 35 lead Seaford past Hewlett
Senior Robert Goldstein scored 35 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and tied Seaford's single-season record with 405 points in the third-seeded Vikings' 49-43 home win over No. 14 Hewlett Thursday night in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs.
The record has stood for 26 years, according to coach Ralph Rossetti. Goldstein, who was 8-for-9 from the line in the fourth quarter, hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to give Seaford (15-3) a 47-43 lead. He has 1,034 points.
Jared Saperstein had 10 rebounds for the Vikings, who will host No. 6 Lawrence at 7 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals. Avery Feldman led No. 14 Hewlett (7-9) with 18 points.Great Neck North 71, South Side 59: Senior Jacob Aghelian scored a career-high 27 points for No. 15 Great Neck North (10-8) in an upset of No. 2 South Side. Alec Ludwig added 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Great Neck North will play at No. 10 Valley Stream North on Monday. Ryan Spadaford led South Side (13-5) with 19 points.
Valley Stream North 55, Roslyn 53: Senior Sean Douglas, who had a career-high 36 points, hit the winning free throws with 22 seconds left in regulation. No. 10 Valley Stream North (8-10) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in 15 years, according to coach Fabian Jara. Douglas also had 10 rebounds, while CJ Byron added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Terrance Pierce led No. 7 Roslyn (12-6) with 20 points.
Lawrence 67, West Hempstead 58: Samson Bialostok scored six of his 13 points in a 22-8 fourth quarter for No. 6 Lawrence (15-3). Ahmad Shamseldin led five players in double figures with 17 points, while Eddie Robinson added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Ibraheem Shamseldin had 11 points and seven assists. Mike Mangino led No. 11 West Hempstead (9-9) with 14 points. Manhasset 69, New Hyde Park 60: Alessandro Troia scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half for No. 1 Manhasset (16-2). Gary Tibbs added 19 points, and Matt Tompkins scored 11. Manhasset will host No. 8 Mineola at 5:15 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals. Adam Priest led No. 16 New Hyde Park (7-11) with 21 points.Mineola 66, Jericho 58: James Bulva scored 26 points for No. 8 Mineola (11-7). Brian Gaffney added 14 points and Mike Waszchuk had 11. Floral Park 61, Sewanhaka 37: Shamoy McIntosh scored 19 of his 24 points in a 38-13 first half for No. 5 Floral Park (15-3). Justin Wilson added 13 points.
