Children's growing bodies need plenty of nutrients, but it can be difficult to get picky eaters to dine on healthy food.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers these suggestions:

  • Offer nutritional snacks, such as whole-grain crackers and low-fat cheese, veggies with a salsa or slices of fresh fruit with low-fat yogurt.
  • Avoid giving children sugary juice or soda. Instead, offer water, low-fat milk or 100 percent fruit juice.
  • Offer a protein-laden food with every meal, such as beans, low-fat dairy products, meat, whole grains and vegetables.
