Huntington Hospital's president and chief executive has announced he will retire at the end of this year.

Kevin F. Lawlor, 62, has worked for the hospital for 25 years -- nine years as its president and CEO, a news release from the hospital said.

"I have been privileged to have had the opportunity to work with so many talented and dedicated employees, physicians and volunteers," Lawlor said in a statement. "My association with this outstanding hospital has been a rewarding experience, and I could not think of a better organization to spend most of my career in health care."

During his tenure, the hospital saw significant progress in several areas, including advanced surgical services, cancer treatment and maternity services, the statement said.

"Huntington Hospital has achieved tremendous success during Kevin's nine years as president and CEO," said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, in a statement. Huntington Hospital is a member of the health system.

Lawlor served as the hospital's chief financial officer for 16 years, before becoming the president and CEO. In 2001, he also became the executive president. He has been responsible for the overall financial management of the hospital, as well as numerous other administrative and operational responsibilities. Lawlor also held financial management positions at Community Hospital of Western Suffolk, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and the Episcopal Health System.

Huntington Hospital's directors and the North Shore-LIJ Health System are expected to select a successor in the next few months.
