Various groups and organizations will help spruce up Hempstead Lake State Park on Saturday as part of the first statewide “I Love My Park Day.”
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.
William Brown, park manager for Hempstead Lake, said the day would focus on shoreline cleanup of the Northwest Pond, just north of the Southern State Parkway near Eagle Avenue.
Brown said groups participating include the newly formed Lake State Park Alliance, the Rockville Centre Conservancy, People to People, and La Fuente, which is part of the Long Island Civic Participation Project.
Chief Equipment, a John Deere dealer in Freeport, will donate equipment to be used in the day’s cleaning, Brown said.
After the cleanup, Brown said, the Lake State Park Alliance will host a barbecue. T-shirts and certificates of appreciation will be given out as well, he said.
REI, an outdoor clothing and equipment store, is a statewide sponsor of the event, according to Laura DiBetta, park program director for event coordinator Parks & Trails New York. DiBetta said REI, which has a store in Carle Place, would take part in the cleanup at Hempstead Lake.
DiBetta said about 40 parks and landmarks will participate.
