In a meeting of unbeaten Conference II rivals, Syosset controlled every facet of the game Tuesday in a 10-4 win over Port Washington in girls lacrosse.

Morgan Lannig led the scoring with three goals for host Syosset, Kim Presuto and Emily Rosen anchored the defense, and freshman Katelyn Igneri helped the Braves dominate possession by winning three draw controls and 10 ground balls.

"I am so proud of these girls,'' coach Lauren LoMonaco said. "I was amazed at their intensity. They come out intense all the time, but this was to a whole other level. Every ground ball, every shot, every draw control.''

Nicole Concannon and Rachel Greenspan added two goals and two assists apiece, and Jacqueline Cuddy had two goals and an assist for Syosset.

Syosset (5-0) was in control from the opening draw, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and taking a 6-2 advantage into halftime. Lannig scored her three goals by the break, and she credited her whole team for the effort.

"We definitely had to spread out and move the ball,'' Lannig said, "but everything started with our defense. Without our defense, our offense is nothing.''

That defense rose to the occasion, because Port Washington (4-1) came into the game averaging more than 15 goals in conference play.

"I think we run one of the best rider-backers in Nassau County,'' said Rosen, a defender who caused three turnovers. "We definitely go into practice every day knowing we can shut anyone down.''

"Our zone is very well put together,'' added Presuto, who made seven saves on the occasions Port Washington was able to get through the zone. "Hard work in practice turns out in the game.''
