Don't knock Palin's 'palm notes'

Regarding Sarah Palin and her "palm notes" : Giving a speech is not a test, and most speakers use written notes of some kind as a memory jogger. However, to claim this is no different from Obama's use of a TelePrompTer is ludicrous. Obama is reading his speeches. We've all heard the "uhhs" and "ummms" that permeate his statements when he is not using the TelePrompTer-in-chief.

During the run-up to the election Palin's TelePrompTer went out once and she completed the speech without incident because she had it memorized.

Weigh consequences if you don't vaccinate

As a family physician, I am compelled to respond to all parents who support vaccine choice .

Yes, you may feel not vaccinating is in the best interest of your child. And chances are that your child will not contract polio, measles, pertussis or mumps, as the majority of children he or she is exposed to have been vaccinated. But as this trend continues, an alarming number of children will be unvaccinated.

I want these parents to consider looking their child in the eyes when he is in a wheelchair from the effects of polio and explaining to him that the disease was preventable.

Or explaining to her why she is experiencing the deathly complications of measles.

Or telling your adult son while he is undergoing infertility treatments that his infertility is a direct complication of his childhood mumps, secondary to a lack of immunization that you chose.

Your children will undoubtedly suffer more not receiving the vaccinations than receiving them. Until there is a proven direct link between vaccines and autism or any other disease process, please protect your child's precious life. It has been entrusted to you and it is your duty as a parent.

Let's not forget the first Tea Party

Guess what, members of the Tea Party? The original organizer of the Boston Tea Party was Sam Adams, who happened to be a liberal. If we had listened to the conservatives in the 18th century this land we live in would still be flying the Union Jack.

We can't afford East Side Access now

East Side Access, the $7.2-billion project to link the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Terminal by 2015, should be closed down until the LIRR can find more money, so we won't lose services and pay fare increases.
