The story "MTA touts LIRR-East Side plan" [News, March 19] makes me wonder. What's wrong with taking a shuttle between Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal? How about spending that $8.1 billion to save Long Island Bus service?
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's proposed extension of the Great Neck pocket track is a perfect example of the agency's wastefulness. The project has nothing to with East Side Access, yet is being touted as increasing Long Island Rail Road capacity for direct service from Great Neck to Grand Central Terminal. The MTA claims ridership will increase, but refuses to even consider increasing station parking.
