Little League parade hits Garden City
Some of Garden City’s youngest athletes warmed up for the national pastime with a walk through the heart of the village Saturday morning.
It was the 56th annual Little League Opening Day Parade, sponsored by the Garden City Athletic Association. Young boys and girls sporting Mets and Yankee uniforms, among others, made the stroll before playing the first baseball and softball games of the season. For some, Saturday was the start of some big dreams.
“I like how you hit home runs, and then you go to the World Series,” said Bryan Downey, a 6-year-old who plays for the Garden City Dodgers.
The parade ended at the Village Green. Several village trustees, along with Deputy Mayor John Watras, threw out first pitches from the gazebo to eager kids, who were waiting for judgment on their teams’ parade banners.
The GCAA presented four of the baseball teams with awards in the banner contest -- the Angels, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays and Marlins.
