LIU campuses get new name
Long Island University has a new identity and a new logo as the school re-brands itself for the world of Twitter and Facebook.
The six campus names are not being changed, but rather unified under one identity in a major re-branding and recruitment initiative, university officials said. Formerly known as the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, the location in Brookville is now known as LIU Post.
Other changes: the Brooklyn campus is now LIU Brooklyn, the Brentwood campus is LIU Brentwood and the campus at Riverhead is LIU Riverhead. The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts is now the LIU Tilles Center; the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy will be known as LIU Pharmacy.
“It is neat, it is clean and it says what it has to say, and it gives us an unequivocal single image,” Long Island University president David Steinberg said Tuesday.
The change, which includes a new logo and logo color for each campus, was spurred by a board of trustees mandate to unify the university’s identity across its campuses, set it apart from competitors and reaffirm a student focus. The change, which includes an advertising campaign, aims to bolster enrollment and raise the university’s profile.
The Long Island location, founded in 1954, had been named for Charles William Post, the founder of Post Cereals. Long Island University purchased the 177-acre estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to the cereal fortune, for $200,000 to establish the college.
A committee of university trustees was formed to oversee the process, and outside advertising veterans were brought in to help craft the campaign.
“In the past, emphasis in communications was on individual campuses and programs. Today, our new message will accentuate strength in unity and resonate with more people,” trustee and alumnus Stan Barshay said in a statement. He leads the committee for the new initiative.
