Long Island girls lacrosse top 10

After six exciting county finals and three tightly-played Long Island Championship games, only three teams — Farmingdale (Class A), Garden City (Class B) and Shoreham-Wading River (Class C) — remain. They'll make the trip up to SUNY Cortland on Thursday in preparation for Friday's state semifinals and Saturday's final.

All three of those teams brough home state titles last year — it was the first time Long Island earned a clean sweep since girls lax went to a three-class format in 2005.

For the Trojans, it was their fourth state Class B title in a row, while SWR has taken the last three in Class C.

Before we get to the rankings, here is the schedule for this weekend at SUNY Cortland:

Class A semifinals: Farmingdale vs. Pittsford (Section V), 9:30 a.m. on Friday. The winner will play the winner of West Genesee (III) and Lakeland/Panas (I) at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Class B semifinals: Garden City vs. Canandaigua (V), noon on Friday. The winner will play the winner of Watertown (III) and Fox Lane (I) at noon on Saturday.

Class C semifinals: Shoreham-Wading River vs. Honeoye Falls-Lima (V), 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The winner will play the winner of Carthage (III) and Nyack (I) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Okay, now that that's squared away, let's jump into the rankings...

In this week's ESPN Rise FAB 50, 13 Long Island teams are in the top 50 in the country, including three in the top 15 and two in the top 10. Garden City remains at No. 2 (behind McDonogh of Maryland, whose season is complete), while Shoreham-Wading River jumps 18 spots to No. 10. Rocky Point moves up six spots to No. 15, St. Anthony's checks in at 23, Manhasset drops 15 spots to No. 25, and Northport falls 13 spots to No. 26. Farmingdale moves up five spots to No. 23, Hauppauge is 35th (down eight), Eastport-South Manor is 36th, Bay Shore is 38th, West Babylon 40th, Wantagh 41st, and West Islip 44th.

Here's this week's Long Island top 10...

1. Garden City (19-0, 8-0 Conference I) —  The Trojan express is barreling towards a fifth straight state Class B championship. Last Tuesday, Garden City won its sixth straight Nassau Class B title with a 20-13 win over No. 2 Wantagh at Hofstra behind Alex Bruno's game-high five goals. On Sunday, the Trojans knocked off Rocky Point 17-7 at the Dowling Sports Complex to win their sixth straight Long Island Class B crown. Mikaela Rix scored a game-high six goals.

Garden City has won 25 straight games dating back to last season and with a win over Canandaigua (Section V) in the state semifinals at noon on Friday at SUNY Cortland, the Trojans will have their fourth 20-win season in five years.

2. Shoreham-Wading River (17-2, 13-1 Division II) — The Wildcats will hold the title as the only Suffolk team to win a state title at least another year, as the three-time defending state Class C champs are the lone Section XI team still standing. On Wednesday, Kait Brosco (6), Chelsey Newman (5) and Jen DeVito (4) accounted for all 15 of SWR's goals in a 15-10 win over No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point in the Suffolk Class C final at the Dowling Sports Complex. On Sunday, Megan Gersbeck led eight different SWR scorers with three goals and an assist in an 11-9 win over Manhasset in the Long Island Class C final back at Dowling.

The Wildcats have won a record seven consecutive Suffolk titles and five straight Long Island championships. They will play Honeoye Falls-Lima of Section V, who they beat in last year's state final, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at SUNY Cortland in the state semifinals.

3. Farmingdale (13-4, 5-3 Conference I): The defending state Class A champs will get to defend their crown after a 13-9 win over Bay Shore on Sunday at the Dowling Sports Complex gave the Dalers their fifth straight Long Island title. Melanie Raso (pictured, right) led the way with four goals and one assist. Last Tuesday, Farmingdale took home its fifth straight Nassau Class A title, and ninth in 10 years, with a 16-5 win over No. 2 Massapequa at Hofstra. Maegan Meritz, Kim Kolodny and Jamie Leone each scored three goals.

The Dalers will play Section V's Pittsford at 9:30 a.m. on Friday morning at SUNY Cortland in the state semifinals.

4. Manhasset (16-2, 7-1 Conference I) — The Indians won their eighth straight Nassau title (the last six coming in the three-classification format) on Thursday with a 19-10 win over No. 3 Cold Spring Harbor at Hofstra. Halle Majorana led the offense with five goals and an assist. On Sunday, Manhasset lost in the Long Island Class C championship game for the fifth straight year to Shoreham-Wading River, 11-9 at the Dowling Sports Complex. Majorana again led the Indians, who had won seven in a row, with five goals and one assist.

5. St. Anthony's (15-3, 9-0 CHSAA) — The Friars season ended on May 24 with a 16-5 win over Sacred Heart in the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA final. It was their third straight title, and they ended the year on a six-game winning streak.

6. Bay Shore (16-4, 12-2 Division I) — The third-seeded Marauders upset No. 1 Northport 13-12 on Wednesday at the Dowling Sports Complex to win their first Suffolk Class A title since 2005. Claire Healy's free-position goal with 13:44 left gave Bay Shore a 13-8 lead and proved to be the game-winner, while Alyssa Leonard led the team with four goals. On Sunday, the Marauders were taken down by Farmingdale in the Long Island Class A championship game back at Dowling, 13-9, despite another four goals and two assists from Leonard, who was the girls Dellecave Award winner.

7. Rocky Point (18-2, 13-1 Division II) — The top-seeded Eagles' one-year hiatus from the Suffolk Class B winner's circle ended on Wednesday at the Dowling Sports Complex with a 9-8 overtime win over No. 3 Hauppauge. Alexa Anzalone (three goals) tallied the game-tying goal with 2.5 seconds left in regulation, and then Kara Mupo's diving shot with 41 seconds left in the first overtime proved to be the game-winner. Rocky Point, which trailed 8-5, has won five of the last six Suffolk Class B titles. On Sunday, the Eagles lost a 17-7 decision to Garden City back at Dowling in the Long Island Class B final.

8. Northport (17-2, 13-1 Division I) — The Tigers' two-year reign over Suffolk Class A ended on Wednesday at the Dowling Sports Complex, as Bay Shore beat them 13-12 in the county final. Courtney Fortunato closed the lead to one with 59.9 seconds to play, but Northport couldn't tally the equalizer. Shannon Gilroy led Northport with a game-high six goals, and she finished the season with Suffolk County-leading 97 goals.

9. Wantagh (13-4, 6-2 Conference I) — The Warriors lost to Garden City for the sixth year in a row in the Nassau Class B final on Tuesday at Hofstra, 20-13. Paula Schmidt and Colleen Lovett each scored four goals in the loss.

10. Hauppauge (16-3, 12-2 Division II) — In their first county final appearance, the No. 3 Eagles had a game effort against top-seeded Rocky Point, losing a 9-8 overtime decision on Wednesday at the Dowling Sports Complex. Samantha Losco scored three goals in the loss, including a score to make it 8-5 late in the game.
