Long Island MacArthur Airport seeks next commissioner

The search is on for the next commissioner of the Long Island MacArthur Airport, and Islip Town officials say resumes will be accepted through early this month.

Interim Commissioner Terry Hennessey, who replaced Teresa Rizzuto when she was fired in June, said he plans to add his resume to the pool in what officials are describing as a nationwide search for the airport’s next chief operating officer.

Despite being advertised on three well-known job search websites, town spokeswoman Inez Birbiglia said the 14 resumes that have come in from outside the town have all been from within New York State.

That includes the resume of Bob Schaefer, a deputy commissioner at MacArthur Airport from 2004 to 2005 who now works as a legislative aide to Suffolk Legis. Thomas F.  Barraga (R-West Islip).

Schaefer said last month that he was happy to apply for the position, adding, “But I told them, if you find someone better, fine.”

Birbiglia said the town bought a 30-day job advertisement in the online edition of The New York Times and a one-week advertisement in the Times print edition in early July. The town has also advertised the post on Monster.com and Avjobs.com. Birbiglia said the total cost of posting the job was about $1,500.

She said there is no word yet as to when interviews will start.
