Longwood superintendent to retire in August

The superintendent of the Longwood School District has announced he will retire in August.
Allan Gerstenlauer has led the district since 2005, but started his career in Longwood in 1974 as a social studies teacher.
He later served as a department chairman, assistant principal, director of secondary education, and assistant superintendent for instruction and learning. He has also led student members of the district’s Legislative Committee on annual lobbying trips to Albany.
“In spite of all the challenges, I have always held the belief that Longwood is extraordinarily well-positioned to move into the future and continue on its trajectory to become a premier school district,” he said in a news release from the district. “My confidence in Longwood is largely grounded in the school community’s uncompromising commitment to children.”
One school board official credited Gerstenlauer with leading the district through some of its most difficult times.
“Yet he never let the kids down as far as maintaining the core of what we do: educate kids,” said board president Michael A. Loguercio, Jr.
