More than $1 million has been recovered in welfare fraud since the beginning of the year, according to Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano.

“My administration is committed to insuring that only the neediest of our citizens receive the assistance to which they’re entitled,” Mangano said in a news release. “It is infuriating when people . . . take food and shelter away from the neediest. Anyone who tries to cheat the system will be apprehended and prosecuted.”

Mangano and the county Department of Social Services said in the release that more than $1 million had been recovered from Medicaid, Temporary Assistance and Day Care fraud.

Uncovered by the DSS Office of Investigations, the results were referred to the offices of State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, said the statement.
