Mayor urges care after Westbury car break-ins

Reacting to police reports of several car break-ins last week, Westbury Village Mayor Peter Cavallaro urged residents at Thursday’s board of trustees meeting to keep their cars locked and belongings hidden.

According to Nassau County police officials, at least three car break-ins occurred on the evening of Sept. 2 on Corporate Drive. The rear passenger door was broken into in one car. The day before, a New Cassel resident who lives on Union Avenue reported vehicle damage. Police are investigating the four break-ins.

At Thursday’s meeting, the mayor warned residents to be cautious, advising them to park cars in their own driveways or garages, if possible. But he said he did not believe the string of break-ins was “alarming,” calling them part of an “isolated incident.”

“It was basically confined to a couple of blocks on the west side of Post Avenue,” he said. “It was probably a couple of kids walking around.”
