Museum to open in historic Glen Cove building

The new North Shore Historical Museum will open officially Jan. 19 in the former Justices Court Building at 140 Glen St.
That day also is the 104th anniversary of the building’s initial opening by the Town of Oyster Bay in 1908.
After more than a decade of restoration, the building will initially be open Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Group tours will also be available for schoolchildren and other organizations.
The museum chartered by the state Department of Education will exhibit artifacts and archives of Long Island’s Gold Coast.
The building was originally a court and jail for the town but within a decade it became the temporary city hall for the new City of Glen Cove. Through the years, it has served Glen Cove as a courthouse and jail.
The courthouse was vacated by the city in 1998 and in 2002 the museum received from owner Sterling Glen of Glen Cove a 99-year lease. In 2006 the museum purchased the building for $10. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children with family membership at $20.
