A challenge to independent candidate John Quirk’s petitions to run for the Nassau County Legislature was adjourned on Friday to allow the Nassau County Board of Elections time to review the case. William Biamonte, Democratic commissioner for the board, said they would be able to complete a request by the judge to finish their work by Wednesday.

Quirk said he was confident he had enough signatures to get on the ballot. “I’ve done my homework, and my lawyer has gone over it, and we have a pretty good case,” Quirk said.

Quirk, a district superintendent for the New York City Department of Sanitation, wants to run as a Libertarian against Republican Donald MacKenzie, an Oyster Bay Water District commissioner, and Oyster Bay Democratic leader David Gugerty for the 18th Legislative District. Quirk’s petitions were challenged by Oyster Bay resident Richard LaMarca, a registered Republican. LaMarca did not respond to calls seeking comment. LaMarca is represented by the Mineola-based law firm Bee, Ready, Fishbein, Hatter & Donovan LLP, which is known for representing Republicans in election cases.
