William E. Rogers is a newcomer to politics. He’s a Democrat who returned to South Farmingdale after medical retirement from the Army last year.

He challenges James D. Kennedy, 47, a Massapequa Republican seeking his fourth full term. Despite his experience, Kennedy has remained in the background, lacking focus and leadership on specific legislation or issues. He says federal COVID-19 relief funding and pharmaceutical company lawsuit money should be used wisely, but did not offer specifics on how to execute that goal despite serious opioid problems in his district.

Rogers, 26, is passionate about many issues, including a plan for residential property tax relief, the expansion of services to veterans and seniors, and advocacy for small businesses, workers' rights and unionization. He should channel this fresh energy to press the need to rethink the assessment system and make progress on veterans affairs in Nassau County.

Newsday endorses Rogers.

Nassau Legislative District 12 covers the Southeast corner of Oyster Bay, Massapequa north to South Farmingdale.
