ALASKA: 2 in Coast Guard slain
Two Coast Guard members were fatally shot Thursday at a communications station on Kodiak Island in what officials said appeared to be a double homicide. They were found at their work areas in the station early Thursday by another Coast Guard member, spokeswoman Sara Francis said. A third person is believed involved in the shooting, she said, with the rest of the roughly 60 enlisted personnel and civilians working at the station accounted for. Capt. Jesse Moore, commanding officer of the Kodiak base, said he was not aware of any threats or anything else that might have indicated problems at the station.
NEW JERSEY: 3rd death in homicide mystery
The girlfriend of a military doctor who killed a former New Jersey colleague, then himself, was found fatally shot in her apartment in North Carolina, authorities said Thursday. Dr. Giocondo Navek, 39, ambushed Dr. Payman Houshmandpour, 32, in his car outside his home in Voorhees, a suburb of Philadelphia, as he was leaving for work Wednesday morning. Minutes later, Navek killed himself when police stopped his vehicle just a mile away. The body of Shawna Dianne Givens, 35, was found Wednesday in her apartment in Fayetteville, N.C., after the hospital where she worked as a military nurse reported she had failed to show up for work. She was believed to have been killed days earlier. Navek, a medical doctor for the Army Reserve, believed his former colleague was responsible for his being dismissed from a residency program, according to Farogh Mozaffari, the mother of Navek's previous girlfriend.
CALIFORNIA: 2 killed over eviction threat
A sheriff's deputy and a civilian were killed Thursday when gunfire broke out as authorities tried to serve an eviction notice at an apartment complex. The shooting led to a standoff with a suspect believed to be holed up in an apartment at the Whispering Woods development in Modesto. More than 100 law enforcement officers surrounded the building. Neighbors Levi Middleton and Jennifer Diaz told the Modesto Bee they heard gunshots in rapid succession, as if from a semiautomatic weapon. The suspect, in his mid-40s, may have had military training, officials said.
