WASHINGTON STATE: Two teen hikers die in fall

Two teenagers died in a fall about 100 feet near a waterfall during a hike in the mountains east of Seattle, authorities said Monday. Benjamin Skagen, 18, and Andrew Lusink, 16, were with two other boys at Otter Falls in the Snoqualmie National Forest on Sunday. One boy fell first, the other moments later when he looked back at what had happened, the King County Sheriff's office said. One of the other boys ran for help and came upon two hikers. The boy continued down the trail, about five miles, until he found a U.S. Forest Service employee. The boy who ran for help was the brother of one of those who fell. The two hikers stayed with the injured boys and performed CPR, but by the time rescue teams reached them Sunday night, they had died.

DELAWARE: A death sentence upheld

A former death row inmate convicted at retrial of the 2005 rape and killing of a University of Delaware student from Westchester, N.Y., drew a death sentence anew Monday. James Cooke Jr., 41, remained defiant as Judge Charles Toliver IV sentenced him to die for the murder of Lindsey Bonistall of White Plains. A jury voted 11-to-1 to recommend that sentence after convicting Cooke in April. Cooke was sentenced to death in 2007, but the Delaware Supreme Court overturned the conviction and death sentence in 2009 because his public defenders argued that he was guilty but mentally ill. Toliver said there was no evidence that Cooke had any intellectual impairment, but instead was of above-average intelligence.

ILLINOIS: Terror suspect in court

Adel Daoud, 18, made an initial appearance in court Monday on charges he sought to ignite what he believed to be a car bomb outside a Chicago bar. Daoud, in an orange jumpsuit and with legs and arms shackled, had a thin beard and thick, curly hair down to his shoulders. When his father waved at him, his attorney asked a U.S. marshal if they could retrieve the teen's eye glasses so he could see his father across the courtroom.
