A Southold police officer suffered a deep cut to his knee helping arrest a Peconic man Friday morning following a domestic incident, according to the Southold Town Police Department.

At 8:02 a.m. Police Officer Brian McNamara was helping Riverhead police arrest Alfredo Chitay following a domestic dispute. Chitay tried to flee and officers had to use force. During the struggle McNamara injured his right knee.

Chitay, 36, was ultimately arrested and charged with two counts of criminal contempt, one count of criminal trespass and one count of second-degree harassment. He was arraigned in Riverhead Court, police said. Details of the arraignment weren't available.

As a result of the injury to the officer, Chitay will also be in Southold Court at a later date to face charges of second-degree assault and resisting arrest, police said.

McNamara was treated and released for his injuries, police said.
