CBS has renewed "NCIS" for the 2011-12 season.

The announcement last week followed word that Tuesday's show attracted a record 22.9 million viewers, up from its previous high of 22 million viewers in January, and also earned its best 18-49 rating since October 2009.

"It's simply amazing that a show in its eighth season continues to perform at such an elite level," said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler. "This is a tribute to the hard work of its talented writers, producers and cast for bringing to life such compelling stories and characters with intrigue and humor."

"NCIS" premiered on CBS in 2003 as a spinoff of the long-running legal drama "JAG." In addition to Mark Harmon, the show stars Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, Sean Murray, Pauley Perrette, Rocky Carroll and David McCallum.
