Glen Cove City Council on Tuesday night accepted a $695,000 state grant for the ongoing construction of the new ferry terminal on Glen Cove Creek.

The partial funding for the terminal, part of redevelopment plans for the former industrial area, came from the Restore NY II Program administered by the Empire State Development Corp. The city must supply a 10-percent matching allocation.

This is the first money the city has received from the state program. The city learned in 2000 that it would receive the money.

Construction crews are working on the bulkheading along the creek, and foundations have been poured for the first phase of the terminal, Mayor Ralph Souzzi said.

“It’s moving along,” he said of the work, which was delayed by winter weather.

In February the council added two months to the agreement with Chesterfield Associates — extending it to July 1 — for the project’s first phase, including grading and drainage improvements and constructing bulkheads, docks and a building foundation.

The city has already received $11 million in federal stimulus funding for the first phase.

Completion is slated for fall, after which the city must construct the rest of the terminal building, estimated at roughly $4 million, some of which is covered by grants.
