The personal assistant of a punk-rock pioneer turned real estate star was convicted Tuesday of bludgeoning her boss to death with a piece of exercise equipment.
Natavia Lowery showed no reaction as the jury delivered its verdict after about five hours of deliberation over the October 2007 death of Linda Stein. She comanaged the influential punk band the Ramones before becoming a Manhattan real estate broker for celebrities.
The verdict followed a monthlong trial that involved a repudiated confession, emotional moments that at one point sent one of the victim's daughters running from the room in tears, an unsuccessful effort by Lowery to fire her lawyers and testimony from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, the victim's ex-husband.
Prosecutors said Lowery, driven to conceal her theft of more than $30,000 from an employer who had just realized it, beat Stein to death in the broker's Fifth Avenue apartment. Defense lawyers acknowledged the theft but said Lowery didn't kill Stein.
Lowery, 28, faces up to 25 years to life in prison for her conviction, which also includes grand larceny, forgery and identity theft charges. Her sentencing is set for March 22.
Her parents denounced the trial as unfair, with her stepfather, Daniel Walsh, saying the pretrial rulings had kept out crucial evidence. He didn't specify what evidence, but the defense was barred from presenting testimony on the psychology surrounding false confessions, among other things.
Stein's daughter Mandy, 35, who found her mother's body, choked up and said, "I'm just really grateful that my mom's getting justice."
