Billy Joel dishes music, marriage on Alec Baldwin's radio show
Anyone in the mood for a melody is in luck, thanks to Alec Baldwin and Billy Joel.
Ever in a New York State of Mind, singer-songwriter Joel, 63, chatted July 30 with Baldwin, 54, about music, marriage, and a shared love of the Big Apple on the actor's WNYC radio show "Here's the Thing."
Though the segment lasts an hour, Buzzfeed pulled the six best minutes of the interview.
Highlights include Joels' "Popeye" impersonation, a goofy duet of Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and a heavily Long Island-accented conversation about Hollywood.
Interestingly, the "30 Rock" star steers the conversation towards marriage more than once, perhaps in light of his June 30 marriage to yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas.
After Joel describes his rise to fame and his famous exes - "I had just gotten divorced from Ex One and here I am meeting Whitney Houston when she was a model, Elle MacPherson, I'm dating her, I'm dating Christie Brinkley" - Baldwin asks Joel about his motivation to marry.
Baldwin: "Was marriage the right thing to do?"
Joel: "I was madly in love."
Baldwin: "Yeah, when you're really in love, you marry them."
Joel later added: "After the third marriage didn't work - I tried marriage, three times. I tried it three times. I never gave up on it. I just realized, I dunno, it just, it doesn't work."
For now, it appears music remains the six-time Grammy winner's mistress, though Joel believes he can turn off his "serendipitous" rock star side at will.
"I know how to take the job hat off and just kind of be normal," he said.
