Two polls released Thursday show former Gov. Eliot Spitzer leading Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the race for city comptroller, but whether it's by a lot or a little depends on the survey.

An NBC 4-Wall Street Journal-Marist Poll, conducted on Wednesday, has Spitzer leading 49 percent to 32 percent among registered Democrats.

A Quinnipiac University poll of Democratic likely voters that was conducted between July 18 and 23, however, showed Spitzer in front by a narrower 49 percent to 45 percent.

"Both candidates' supporters seemed to be fairly well locked in," Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement.

Marist pollsters interviewed 1,199 New York voters and their survey has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points, while the Quinnipiac poll has a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points and collected data from 1,340 voters.

Despite resigning as governor after a prostitution scandal in 2008, Spitzer appeared to have an edge with female voters in both polls. In the Marist poll, women preferred him over Stringer, 45 percent to 33 percent, and in the Quinnipiac poll they chose him 48 percent to 44 percent.
