A Staten Island man suspected of plotting attacks on behalf of the Islamic State group tried repeatedly to stab an FBI agent and fought with other counterterrorism agents Wednesday when they entered his home with a search warrant, federal officials said.
Fareed Mumuni, 21, was disarmed in the morning tussle and agents suffered minor injuries in making the third arrest in a plot to bomb New York landmarks and tourist attractions, according to court papers.
Mumuni's large kitchen knife did not pierce the FBI agent's body armor, the complaint said, but he did "intentionally attempt to kill" law enforcement officers.
He told agents he had kept the knife wrapped in a T-shirt in his bed in case he needed it to attack law enforcement officers and that was also the reason for leaving a knife, found in a duffle bag, in a vehicle his mother lets him use, court papers said.
Mumuni was arraigned in a Brooklyn federal court Wednesday on a charge of attempting to murder a federal employee.
The judge granted a request by the U.S. attorney's office for the Eastern District, which covers Long Island, to hold Mumuni behind bars until the conclusion of the case. Prosecutors said he is dangerous and a flight risk.
Mumuni's attorney could not be reached.
The FBI said Mumuni plotted with Munther Omar Saleh, 20, a Queens aeronautics student who lived in Medford with his family about six years ago. Saleh was arrested with an unnamed co-conspirator Saturday as they tried to attack an undercover vehicle following them near the Whitestone Expressway.
In a wiretap on Saleh's cellphone, the two men were caught this month talking about attacking law enforcement officers, the FBI said.
"After Mumuni asked for more guidance," the FBI complaint said, "Saleh wrote to use a bomb and then to run over members of law enforcement with a vehicle, seize the weapons of any victims, and use the weapons to shoot at other victims."
After waiving his Miranda rights, Mumuni said he had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, and planned to join the group in territories it controlled, the FBI said.
