Future fashion stars get spotlight with city help at Chelsea studio
A group of city fashion entrepreneurs are getting the change of a lifetime to show off their stuff to a wider audience.
Eleven clothing designers, related tech companies and distributors were unveiled Wednesday as the winners of the Project Pop-up NYC competition.
For the rest of the month, the fashion gurus will share space at STORY, a retail store located on 10th Avenue in Chelsea, for no charge and receive free PR and other help from the city.
The announcement came on the eve of Fashion Week, which brings in more than $800 million annually for the city according to the mayor.
A committee of fashion and business experts judged the applicants for their entrepreneurship ideas and skills.
Jamal Motlagh, CEO Founder of Acustom Apparel in SoHo, said he plans to use the space to show off his business which uses a body scanner to make custom suits for men and jeans for women.
"It's a new world out there, and we know custom fit will be a big thing," he said.
Not all of the companies deal with needles and thread. Contest winner Sarah Paiji will be showing off her mobile app Snapette that gives customers information about new fashion stores and discounts.
"We help people with the offline experience," she said.
