MetroCard machines were on the fritz Monday morning, preventing some straphangers from buying a card during rush hour.

The machines inexplicably refused to accept credit and debit cards at about 9 a.m., the MTA said, and only accepted cash for about an hour.

An MTA spokesman said the problem had been fixed and that the agency was trying to figure out what caused the malfunction.
