New York recovering from record-breaking snowstorm

New Yorkers Sunday were still recovering from a freak snowstorm that blasted the city Saturday, dropping a record-setting 1.3 inches in Central Park, leaving tens of thousands without power and killing at least two people.

The nor’easter, remarkably uncommon for this time of year, made this the snowiest October since records started being taken in 1869, according to the National Weather Service.

Some 77,000 New Yorkers were left without power, and that blackout is being blamed for the death of Kheowla Ramprasad, 77, of the Bronx, after her oxygen machine shut down from the outage, the New York Daily News reported.

A 20-year-old woman was also killed and a 19-year-old man critically wounded when they were reportedly struck by a car on the Cross Bronx Expressway early yesterday as they examined a pileup they were involved in on the icy road.

Meanwhile, city parks reopened yesterday after being shuttered the day before due to danger from falling branches.
