Two NYPD officers shot and wounded a 23-year-old man who pointed a gun at them during a foot chase early Sunday in East Harlem, police officials said. It was the third police-involved shooting in the city in a week.

The officers were responding about 2 a.m. to reports of a disturbance involving a man with a gun at the George Washington Houses, a New York City Housing Authority complex, police said. They found a group gathered there and questioned the man, whom officials did not identify, police said.

The suspect then fled on foot and pointed a gun at them during the chase, police said. Both officers fired at him, police said. It was not clear whether the suspect discharged his weapon.

The suspect's .22 caliber RG revolver was recovered at the scene, police said.

The man Sunday was in critical but stable condition at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The officers, who were not named by police, were treated at Mount Sinai St. Luke's hospital for ringing in their ears.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, police said.

On Friday, four NYPD officers shot and killed Scott Kato, 45, of Mount Vernon, on the Upper East Side. Kato, who officials say raised his handgun at the police, was suspected of robbing a pharmacy of drugs and cash about 30 blocks away.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

And in another police-involved shooting May 11 in the Fordham section of the Bronx, a 23-year-old man was injured by an NYPD lieutenant. The suspect pointed his gun at the lieutenant, who in turn shot the man in the ankle.
