'Possession' tops Labor Day box office, while 'Oogieloves' sets record low
A kids movie set a record over the weekend that filmmakers won't be proud of.
"Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure" was the least-grossing wide release, taking $827,000 with a meager $206 per movie theater.
The movie pulled in just $445,000 through its first three days, a figure expected to rise to $602,000 yesterday. The three-day total ranked as the lowest debut for a film playing in at least 2,000 theaters, according to website Box Office Mojo.
Horror film "The Possession" took hold of the No. 1 spot, grabbing an estimated $21.3 million in ticket sales.
The supernatural thriller beat new Prohibition-era crime drama "Lawless."
