After years of speculation, "Simpsons" fans finally know which one's the real Springfield.

Cartoonist Matt Groening told Smithsonian Magazine that Homer's hometown was based on Springfield, Ore., next to Groening's own hometown of Portland.

The "Simpsons" creator has long been coy about where the show is set, since "Springfield" is one of the most common city names in the U.S. Fans have tried to piece together clues to its location dropped in episodes.

Groening said he's kept mum on the subject because he "didn't want to ruin it for people."

"Whenever people say it's Springfield, Ohio, or Springfield, Massachusetts, or Springfield, wherever, I always go, 'Yup, that's right,'" he said in the interview, which was published online yesterday.

Niel Laudati, a spokesman for Springfield, Ore., told amNewYork that Groening's announcement is "a little bit of old news" to the folks who live there. When a Simpsons movie came out in 2007, Groening gave a signed plaque to the town with an inscription that read: "Yo to Springfield, Oregon - the real Springfield!" It's on display in the Springfield Museum.

"We love it," Laudati said. "We have fun with it. It comes from an endearing spot in his heart.
