2013 All-Long Island baseball team

MATT CROHAN
Long Island Player of the Year, First baseman/Pitcher, Riverhead
Crohan won the 46th Annual Carl Yastrzemski Award, as Suffolk's top player. The 6-2, 195-pounder was the first Riverhead player to win the award after compiling a 6-1 record with 104 strikeouts and an 0.64 ERA. He threw back-to-back no-hitters against East Islip and Centereach and extended his streak of hitless innings to 19 before allowing a hit against Copiague. |

ANTHONY MARTELLI
Nassau Player of the Year, Shortstop/Pitcher, Valley Stream North
Martelli batted a stellar .505, led Long Island with nine home runs, drove in 35 runs and scored 37 more, had an on-base percentage of .610 and stole 20-of-21 bases. And by the way, his team went 6-0 with him on the mound as he posted a 4-0 record and a 3.20 ERA. |

JESSE BERARDI
Shortstop, Commack, junior
The slick-fielding shortstop was just as adept with his bat, hitting .414 with 19 RBIs and 16 runs scored while sporting a .521 on base percentage. He finished the season with a .940 fielding percentage and showed the ability to make the steady plays as well as the spectacular. |

ALEX COSENZA
Pitcher, Massapequa, junior
Cosenza pitched brilliantly in the playoffs to lead the Chiefs to the Nassau AA championship. In four postseason starts, he had three complete games and was 3-1 with a 0.29 ERA. Cosenza was 9-2 overall with a 1.23 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 57 innings. |

GREG EGAN
Pitcher, St. John the Baptist, senior
Egan finished the season a perfect 9-0 on the mound and was one of the most dominant right handed pitchers on Long Island. He struck out 88 batters in just 56 innings. Egan earned the win in the clinching game of both the CHSAA semifinals against St. Anthony's and the finals against St. Dominic. Egan's most dominating outing came on April 23 against Holy Trinity when he threw a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts. |

JOE FLYNN
Third baseman/Pitcher, Ward Melville, sophomore
Flynn led Suffolk with eight home runs and finished the season on a power binge. Flynn had five home runs in the Suffolk playoffs, including a two homer, seven RBI performance in the championship game against Connetquot. He finished the season with a .392 batting average, 20 RBIs, 22 Runs scored and a 1.307 OPS. |

JOE FUSCO
Shortstop/Pitcher, Clarke, senior
Fusco hit .402 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs, and on the mound posted a 7-1 record with a 2.15 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 57 innings. In the deciding Game 2 of the Nassau A championship series against Plainedge, the Hofstra-bound Fusco was the winning pitcher and sparked the offense with a two-run double in a 10-3 victory. |

ADAM HEIDENFELDER
Pitcher, MacArthur, junior
Heidenfelder won the Diamond Award, given by Nassau coaches to the county's best pitcher, as he posted a 6-1 record with a 0.92 ERA, 88 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 53 innings. Heidenfelder led MacArthur to the Nassau AA championship series with two scoreless outings in the playoffs and two games in the regular season in which he recorded 17 strikeouts. |

DAN HETZEL
Outfielder, Sachem East, senior
The League II MVP led Sachem East to the League II championship and the third seed in Suffolk Class AA playoffs. Hetzel was named Suffolk's Silver Slugger and blasted seven including the playoffs. He also hit .450 with 24 runs, 24 RBIs and a 1.518 OPS. Hetzel performed well in the playoffs, hitting .500. He will attend the University of Rhode Island. |

ANTHONY KAY
Pitcher, Ward Melville, senior
The senior lefty, who won the Gibson Award in 2012, led Ward Melville to its best season in program history. Kay went 7-2 with 87 strikeouts in 65.2 innings and threw Ward Melville's first no-hitter since 1991. Kay was drafted by the Mets in the 26th round and also has a scholarship to the University of Connecticut. |

JACK PIEKOS
First baseman/Pitcher, Bayport-Blue Point, junior
The junior lefty was brilliant this season compiling an 11-0 record and leading the Phantoms to the Long Island Class A state championship with a 4-1 win over Clarke. He threw a no-hitter over Rocky Point in the first round of the playoffs and tossed a 4-0 shutout in the state semifinal over Queensbury. He committed to the University of Maryland. |

COLMAN VILA
Pitcher, Pierson/Bridgehampton, senior
The lefty finished the season 9-1 with a 0.00 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 69.2 innings and allowed only 19 hits and 10 walks. Vila threw two no-hitters on the season, including one against Friends Academy in the Long Island championship game. Vila also sported a .424 batting average and was 15-for-15 stealing bases. He will attend Delaware in the fall. |

MATTHEW VOGEL
Shortstop/Pitcher, Patchogue-Medford, senior
Vogel finished the season 4-1 on the mound with a 0.97 ERA in 29 Innings and struck out 64 to go along with a 0.84 WHIP. The highlight of his season came when he used his mid-90's fastball to throw a no-hitter and strikeout 20 against Brentwood. Vogel was drafted in the 36th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks and has a commitment to South Carolina. |

STEPHEN WOODS
Pitcher, Half Hollow Hills East, senior
Woods had his most dominant stretch in mid-April when he fired two consecutive no-hitters with a combined 30 strikeouts. The right hander has committed to Albany but was selected in the sixth round of the MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He finished the season with a 5-2 record with a 0.63 ERA and struck out 90 batters in 44 innings while allowing just 12 hits and walking 23. |

JIM MOCCIO Suffolk co-Coach of the Year, Bayport-Blue Point
Moccio led Bayport-Blue Point to a perfect 27-0 season and a Class A state championship. The Phantoms became the first team from Suffolk and fourth from Long Island to complete a perfect season and win a state title. The last Suffolk Class A baseball team to go undefeated and untied was Huntington, in 1949. |

LOU PETRUCCI
Suffolk co-Coach of the Year, Ward Melville
Petrucci led Ward Melville to its first Suffolk and Long Island Class AA championships in 45 years of baseball at the school. His team swept Commack in the final three-game series of the League I season to capture the league crown and went on an 11-game win streak before losing the state semi to Baldwinsville, 2-0. |

TOM ABRUSCATO
Nassau Coach of the Year, Clarke
In his 15th season, Abruscato won his sixth county championship and 14th conference crown, leading Clarke to the Nassau class A title and a 22-6 overall record. On April 8th, he recorded his 300th career victory in a 9-1 win over Manhasset. |
