Newsday's All-Long Island baseball team 2015

LONG ISLAND PLAYER OF THE YEAR: NICK FANTI, P, Hauppauge, Sr.

This was Nick Fanti's dream season. It all came together for the hard-throwing lefthander. He was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 31st round of the major-league amateur draft and he earned the Yastrzemski Award, given to Suffolk's top player -- all in the same day.

"You really couldn't have a better day," Fanti said. "I thought it was a great day and then it got even better that night at the coaches awards dinner. I'm still kind of floored by the whole thought of being honored by the coaches and picked by the Phillies."

Fanti had one of the finest statistical seasons in Long Island history. As a pitcher he was nearly unhittable, and as a batter he was difficult to get out.

He earned the Suffolk League V MVP award after he went 7-1 with an 0.67 ERA. He struck out 87 in 52 innings and allowed only 14 hits. Fanti pitched back-to-back no-hitters against Glenn and Huntington, and his bid for a third straight no-hitter was broken up in the fifth inning against Bellport. He went 23 straight innings without allowing a run. He batted .541 with 40 hits, 27 RBIs and 35 runs scored for the Eagles, who the Suffolk League V title and finished with an 18-3 record.

NASSAU PLAYER OF THE YEAR: MITCH CALANDRA, Floral Park, C, Sr.

A five-year starter who earned the Diamond Award, given to Nassau's top position player. The big hitter had a .471 average with 41 hits, including 12 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 40 runs scored. He also split his time between pitching and catching and had a 5-1 record with 60 strikeouts in 35 innings and a 1.60 ERA. He had 143 hits, 13 home runs, 90 RBIs and a .385 average in his career.

TOM ARCHER, St. John the Baptist, 2B, Sr.

The All-Catholic League second baseman batted .368 with 24 hits, including seven doubles and 18 runs scored. He made only one error in the past two years with 129 chances. The sure-handed infielder will play at Hofstra in the fall.

TRAVIS BRUINSMA, Connetquot, P, Sr.

The righthander set a school record with 13 wins to lead Connetquot to the Long Island Class AA title. He finished with a 13-3 record and had 91 strikeouts in 86 innings, pitching for an ERA of 1.54. He was the winning pitcher in the Suffolk Class AA and Long Island championship games.

JOE FLYNN, Ward Melville, 3B, Sr.

The two-time All-Long Island selection earned the Paul Gibson Award winner as Suffolk's top pitcher with a 6-0 record, 52.1 innings pitched, 73 strikeouts and a 1.07 ERA. He led Ward Melville to the League I title with a .509 average, 30 runs scored, 29 hits and five home runs. He walked 29 times and was hit by 11 pitches. He earned the Suffolk League I MVP and will play at Princeton in the fall.

SAL FRADELLA, Chaminade, P, Sr.

Earned the CHSAA Pitcher of the year with a 10-0 record, including four shutouts and two saves. He pitched 71 innings with 68 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.16. He led Chaminade to the CHSAA title with a 10-inning 1-0 shutout over St. Dominic. He will play at Villanova University.

AARON GAGLIANO, Connetquot, OF, Sr.

He led Suffolk with a .565 batting average and earned the Blue Chip Prospects Silver Slugger Award as Suffolk's top hitter. He drove in 34 runs, including 23 with two outs, and scored 31 runs en route to helping Connetquot win the Long Island Class AA title. He had seven game-winning hits and will play at Albany in the fall.

REISS KNEHR, St. Dominic, P, Sr.

He was named the CHSAA Player of the Year. He finished 7-2 with a .068 ERA and averaged 11 strikeouts per game. In his final outing for St. Dominic, the Fordham-bound Knehr gave up one hit and walked one in nine innings, striking out 11 in a 1-0, 10-inning loss to Chaminade.

PATRICK LAGRAVINESE, Smithtown East, SS, Sr.

After helping lead St. John the Baptist to back-to-back NSCHSAA titles, Lagravanese transferred to Smithtown East and was named Suffolk's League III Most Valuable Player. He turned a 6-14 team into an 18-2 league champion with his leadership on the mound and in the middle infield. He was 5-0 on the mound and he batted .363 with 23 walks, 21 runs scored and 11 doubles. He will play at Albany.

DAN MCEVOY, Westhampton, OF, Sr.

The speedy middle infielder was the offensive catalyst for the Hurricanes. He had 32 hits, including three doubles and three triples, and scored 30 runs. He batted .444 and had an on-base percentage of .575. He also stole 26 of 29 bases. He will play at Stony Brook in the fall.

ANDREW MISIASZEK, South Side, P, Sr.

The hard-throwing lefty earned the Diamond Award given to Nassau's top pitcher after throwing four shutouts. He set a school record with 19 strikeouts in a game and threw a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts in another win. He finished with a 7-2 record and struck out 110 batters in 57.1 innings for an ERA of 0.61. In his career, he was 15-4 with 202 strikeouts and a 1.96 ERA. He will play at Northeastern.

BRANDON MORSE, Connetquot, 1B, Sr.

The Thunderbirds cleanup hitter batted .454 with 29 RBIs, leading them to the Long Island Class AA crown. He scored 18 runs and hit four doubles, a triple and three home runs. He will play at Adelphi in the fall.

ANTHONY PAPA, Division, P, Sr.

A dual position player who helped Division capture the Long Island Class A crown. He pitched a shutout to beat Bayport-Blue Point, the two-time defending state champion, in the Long Island final. He earned the Diamond Award after batting .417 with a pair of home runs, 38 RBIs, 36 runs scored and 18 walks. He was also 4-2 with 24 strikeouts in 34 innings. In his career, he had a .396 average, 100 hits, 94 RBIs, 94 runs scored and 34 extra base hits.

BRIAN PEREZ, MacArthur, SS, Sr.

The leadoff hitter was on base 56 times in 107 plate appearances and stole 30 bases in 30 attempts. He had 29 hits, 28 runs scored, 15 walks and was hit with nine pitches. He drove in 19 runs and led MacArthur to the Nassau Class AA title.

COACH OF THE YEAR: BOB AMBROSINI, Connetquot

Connetquot's Bob Ambrosini was named baseball coach of the year for the 2015 spring season.

COACH OF THE YEAR: STEVE DECARO, Mattituck

Mattituck's Steve Decaro was named baseball coach of the year for the 2015 spring season.
