Northport store window goes to the dog
How much is that doggy in the window?
“Like I haven’t heard that one before,” said Pam Holland, the manager at Einstein’s Attic in Northport.
Lucy, a 9-year-old rescue dog, sits perfectly still in the Northport toy store’s display window as people pass the shop on Main Street. She is often mistaken for a stuffed toy, Holland said. Then she blinks or moves her ears, and the toy store usually gains a customer, or at least a visitor.
“She’s very appreciative of her home,” Holland said.
Store proprietor Lynn Usher owns Lucy, a border collie-pointer mix who has held court in that window nearly her whole life. And she’s earned her keep, Holland said.
In addition to her marketing pull, she will retrieve help for customers who find the shop's front momentarily unattended when they arrive. Once the customer is being helped, Lucy will return to her often sunny perch.
Northport’s Kate Werwa, 32, and her 22-month-old son, Graham, were out for a walk Thursday when Werwa noticed Lucy lying in the window, her head resting on her paws.
“Look,” she said to her baby in a coddling voice. She rolled Graham’s stroller up to the window, and his face lit up as he realized the doggy was real.
“We like to come and see the dog,” she said.
