Danielle Lascala, 36, of Lindenhurst, and her father, Salvatore, own Mattituck Florist, on the corner of Love Lane and Sound Avenue.

How long has the shop been here?
We moved to this location about a year ago, but we were across the street for 30 years.

How long have you and your father owned it?
Six years. I worked for the previous owners that were running it more as a garden center and then when they were ready to move on we bought it from them.

What do you like about working in this area?
I’ve worked in retail for a huge part of my life and the North Fork clientele are the most pleasant. They are very kind, sort of old-school, polite. They want to talk about their day, they’re not in a rush for anything. If something is going to take some extra time, they’ll wait.

What is it like owning a shop on Love Lane, specifically?
It’s a very tight-knit community. The business owners are all extremely pleasant. We all really aim to bring something different to the block. We are friendly and we help each other out.

What do you mean that you all try to bring something different?
Well, there are a lot of specialty stores, like the cheese shop and the gift shop. But in all the stores, we try not to bring in items that someone else already has so we don’t step on each other’s toes. I’m actually going to change the focus of this place to make it more of a European flower shop feeling. So, not so many gifts, because there’s already a lot of that.

What made you move locations?
Love Lane is like Park Avenue. It’s all about location. Our other shop was around the corner, on Main Road, and this is a whole different world. Love Lane offers street fairs, there’s a movie night, there’s a lot of things happening.

It seems like all the storefronts stay filled, is that true?
It’s very true. If there’s a spot vacant it gets swept up immediately. There’s a store open right now and I think it’s already been taken for a wine-tasting shop.

How would you describe Mattituck?
It’s just a nice, quiet, pretty place.
