The United States Postal Service is looking for a new and smaller home for its Northport site.

Nationwide, the USPS is trying to decrease its real estate holdings, as it continues to see its revenues and first-class mail volumes drop.

Spokesman George Flood said the agency would like to find a new Northport site that is about a quarter of the size of the current location, which is 15,201 square feet. Flood said a request for proposals is slated to be released at the end of the month.

He said the current plan includes having Northport’s retail business in the new building and its carrier operations, which include 19 routes, moved to the East Northport Post Office.

The Northport Post Office currently has about 40 employees, the majority of whom work on the carrier routes, and the current plan wouldn’t call for any layoffs, Flood said.

He said the agency wants to stay downtown, where there is the most foot traffic. “That is Marketing 101.”

The 240 Main St. location has been operating as the village’s post office since 1939.
