Readers share memories of LI ski areas
Friday's Newsday story about former downhill ski areas on Long Island prompted many reader memories, including some about areas not mentioned in the story.
So we offer reader comments on two additional sites:-
"The 18th fairway at Baiting Hollow Golf Course had a good ski slope with a rope tow."
-Floyd Linton, of Montauk, who skied there during high school in the early 1960s
"There is one place that you did not mention ... I lived a block away from the place and remembered it well. It was Hermann Greim Park on Landscape Drive in Wheatley Heights. It was the Town of Babylon's attempt to bring skiing to its residents. There was a rope tow that brought you to the top of the hill, a ski shop where you could rent ski equipment (Emilio's Ski Shop), lights for nighttime skiing and snow-making equipment which assured patrons of a coating of snow without dependence on the temperature. I can still hear the snow-making equipment roaring through the night. The park ceased skiing and snow making operations in the early '70's, citing costs and Long Island's variable winter climate. Today, the hill is still there, making it a great spot for sledding for local residents."
